Ronin is a miniature game that transports players to the captivating world of feudal Japan during the Sengoku period of the 16th century. Written by Craig Woodfield and published by Osprey Wargames in August 2013, this rulebook offers an immersive and action-packed experience, focusing on skirmishes between small groups of fighters, known as Buntai.
One of Ronin’s distinctive features is its flexibility and simplicity of gameplay. The game can be played with a variable number of models, ideal for the small-scale skirmishes typical of this historical period. With a minimum of eight models and a maximum of twenty, players can easily tailor the size of their force to their preferences and the available space on the gaming table, which can vary in size from 60×60 to 120×120 cm.
The rulebook, comprising 64 pages, features clear and understandable text, enriched by vivid color illustrations. However, the gameplay images only showcase miniatures from the specific Ronin model range created by Northstar.
The rules are explained in a straightforward manner, spanning a total of 17 pages, including special aspects such as mounted combat and extra abilities.
But the book doesn’t stop at basic rules: it also provides an overview of the eight playable factions, tournament suggestions, advanced rules, and even a basic campaign system for those seeking a more challenging and structured experience.
